The Military and Sports Medicine Interest Group is a Dell Medical School student organization for learners interested in military medicine, orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), family sports medicine, and related fields. The group provides students with opportunities to explore these interests through clinical exposure, research, mentorship, and professional connections, while developing empathetic leaders who understand the human side of musculoskeletal care.
Our partner, Steps2Walk, is a global nonprofit dedicated to restoring mobility for individuals with disabling foot and ankle conditions in underserved communities. In many regions, limited surgical resources leave patients without viable treatment options. Steps2Walk addresses this gap by providing reconstructive care while collaborating with local providers and offering medical students hands-on exposure to global orthopedic care and resource-conscious medicine.
This project will support Dell Med students in joining Steps2Walk missions under the mentorship of Dr. Shuyuan Li, an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon at Dell Medโs Musculoskeletal Institute and International Program Director for Steps2Walk. One to two students will accompany her on mission trips, beginning with Honduras this July. Funds raised will cover travel, lodging, and related expenses, allowing students to participate without financial barriers. Through these missions, students gain firsthand experience in compassionate, patient-centered care while contributing to Dell Medical Schoolโs commitment to improving health locally and globally.
