Discovery Starts Here with BME Undergrad Research!

At The University of Texas at Austin’s department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), we know that undergraduate independent research opens doors after graduation. Research experience helps students stand out when applying to medical school. It provides hands-on experience that’s valuable for industry R&D roles. For students considering graduate school, research lays the groundwork for advanced study. When you donate, you’re directly helping students gain these experiences and set themselves up for success.

We’re calling on our community of alumni, friends and partners to sustain the next generation of biomedical engineers. Your support will allow us to fund students with bold ideas, providing the materials, tools, professional development and/or conference travel they need to test concepts, analyze data and bring their innovations to life over the course of an academic year.
"Thanks to the opportunity, I learned how to make meaningful research, create scientific posters, practice presenting and building confidence. I still use these skills that I gained from this conference every day for school and work" – Thao Huynh, BME senior.
"We were able to travel to design competitions and were confident that we did our best because we had access to resources we otherwise would have not been able to afford" – Deeya Kaneria, BME senior.
"I plan to use the URF [undergraduate research funds] to present my research at a national conference and learn from others working on early disease detection. In the long term, I hope to build a career that combines clinical medicine and research focused on improving how diseases are detected and managed earlier" – Vibhu Kanna Rajesh Kanna, BME/Engineering Honors junior.

Your gift will help seed an endowment that supports multiple undergraduate research awards each year, funding student‑driven projects from concept to execution. Designed and proposed by a student and guided by a BME faculty mentor, these projects will immerse undergraduates in the foundational research that drives the future of biomedical engineering while enabling them to earn independent study credit.
Seeding the endowment allows the funds to continue to grow, and the proceeds to be available year after year to support independent study projects submitted by BME undergraduate students.
Join BME in supporting the independent research projects of our undergraduate students!
**Should the minimum funding for an endowment not be reached, funds raised will be used to provide outright support for undergraduate research awards.
Spark a discovery! Invest in research! Empower the future of biomedical innovation!
