Fifth Graders Grow Through Outdoor Education
Outdoor School is a transformative, hands-on learning experience that takes students out of the classroom and into nature. For The University of Texas Elementary School (UT Elementary) fifth-grade Little Longhorns, this trip to Marble Falls is more than just a field trip—itโs a rite of passage.
Over the course of three days and two nights, students:
- Experience touching, smelling and tasting Texas flora
- Participate in individual and team challenges for growth
- Physical activities including swimming and kayaking
- Engage in hands-on learning that is tied directly to class standards - including viewing the stars in dark sky country
These immersive activities not only reinforce classroom learning but also spark curiosity and wonder in ways that traditional settings often cannot.

For many of these students, Outdoor School marks their first time away from home and their first encounter with the big sky country. The experience of total darkness, unpolluted skies, and the quiet of the countryside is both awe-inspiring and unfamiliar. Seeing the stars clearly—some for the very first time—is a moment of magic that stays with them.
This trip helps students build independence and confidence, especially through the ropes course and climbing wall, where they learn to trust themselves and their peers. These skills are essential as they prepare to transition to middle school, which for over half of them will be their first time in a new school environment.

The significance of this trip is underscored by the rising costs associated with making it happen. Since 2021, prices have increased substantially, with the cost of transportation alone doubling—now $1,000 each way for the bus and the per-student cost has risen to $200. Despite these challenges, UT Elementary remains committed to ensuring every fifth grader has the opportunity to participate in this milestone experience.

Outdoor School is not just a few days in nature—itโs a celebration of growth, learning, and transition. It honors the journey these students have taken through elementary school and prepares them for the next chapter with resilience, curiosity, and a deeper connection to the world around them.
