Women in Mechanical Engineering (WME) is a tight-knit community dedicated to helping Mechanical Engineers at UT Austin expand their networks and create community, develop improved professional and academic skills, and ultimately uplift the next generation of female leaders in STEM. Any UT student or faculty member is welcome to participate in WME.
Founded in 2013 by Professor Dr. Janet Ellzey, WME started as a small group of students and faculty gathering over coffee once a month. Today, it has grown into an award-winning organization recognized by the City of Austin and UT’s University Health Services for its commitment to student well-being and community engagement.
Your contributions will directly support WME’s mission by funding social, academic, technical, and professional development events. One of our most impactful programs is Machine Shop Workday, where students gain hands-on experience with machining tools like mills and lathes in a safe and guided environment. Many participants have credited this event with boosting their confidence in working with machining tools and returning to the machine shop for their personal or class projects.
Beyond technical training, your support will help us expand our outreach to graduate students, corporate alumni, and faculty. It will also allow us to continue giving back to the broader UT and Austin communities through volunteer efforts at events like UT Girl Day and the Cockrell School’s World of Engineering.

Every gift, no matter the size, helps us continue creating opportunities that inspire and equip the next generation of women engineers. Join us in making a lasting impact!
