In the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering, we design and build devices and systems that transform industries and improve lives around the world. A pioneer in areas such as robotics and advanced manufacturing, Texas Mechanical Engineering is the birthplace of selective laser sintering, one of the first and most successful 3D-printing technologies. Our undergraduate and graduate programs are consistently recognized as the best in the nation, leading the way in mechanical engineering education and innovation.
One mechanism by which the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering nurtures future leaders is through participation in student competition and design teams. Although optional, participation in these teams is an invaluable part of our studentsโ engineering education. Not only do they gain important technical experience, the students also learn how to collaborate with their teammates and develop an entrepreneurial skill set. These teams are also ambassadors to the world, demonstrating to others the role that UT plays in our community, the state, and the country. One of the department's major goals is to broaden access to these design experiences to a larger group of UT students, and to provide these students exposure to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities by revamping and expanding our first floor space in the Engineering Teaching Center.
Completing this renovation will increase the overall efficiency and safety standards of our working spaces. Our student teams will gain valuable space to build, store equipment, and meet as a group. We hope to brighten and modernize this space to allow collaboration and innovation to thrive. Some teams that will be impacted include: Longhorn Racing, Texas Rocket Engineering Lab, Texas Guadaloop, EcoCAR EV Challenge and more.
