Psychology has become one of the most popular academic majors - not just at UT Austin but nationally as well. There are many career opportunities that are well matched to a psychology skillset. These include roles in business, academia & research, mental & physical healthcare, community services, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies. Our department has increased our focus on career support services for our majors. We also strive to elevate skills that are in high demand in the 21st century workforce. For example, we are teaching our students how to use statistical, analytical, and programming skills (Python, R, SQL, Hadoop, etc.) to extract insights and knowledge from structured and unstructured data. This way, our graduates are equipped to help organizations make data-driven decisions. Students knowledgeable in psychology can also help to solve complex problems, such as predicting customer behavior, detecting fraud, or automating decision-making.
Providing students with education and skillsets is an important part of supporting their career planning. But it’s not the only part. It is critical that students also get more structured career guidance that includes everything from aptitude and interest evaluations to resumé creation and interview preparation. In addition, students benefit greatly from hearing for other successful graduates who are just a few years ahead of them. Finally, career-focused internship opportunities have become almost essential for our students to reach their full potential and to remain highly competitive candidates for the jobs they seek. What the fund can support: 1) Psychology-focused career resources 2) Career fairs and forums 3) Internship development
A gift to the Department of Psychology directly supports undergraduate students by providing them with opportunities to gain first hand experience, explore career paths in meaningful fields, and develop professional skills that extend beyond the classroom. With your support, students can access and gain hands-on experience through internship programs, psychology research experience, present research at and attend conferences, and engage in professional development programs that prepare them for their futures. Philanthropy has already made a meaningful impact on our students. In the past, donor contributions have helped fund travel grants for students presenting research at national conferences, ensuring that financial barriers don’t limit their opportunities. Support has also allowed students to participate in workshops and mentorship programs, connecting them with professionals in psychology and related fields. Every gift helps shape the next generation of psychologists, researchers, and mental health professionals by giving them the resources they need to thrive. Your support empowers students to build skills, make connections, and gain experiences that will have a lasting impact on their academic and professional journeys.
