About MDM
The National Medical Device Make-A-Thon (MDM) is an annual 48-hour competition that draws together 150 students from over 13 different colleges and majors spanning engineering, computer science, and business. The student teams design, prototype, and pitch a medical device that tackles the competition topic, with past themes including physical rehabilitation, women’s health, and cardiovascular disease.
The UT Biomedical Engineering Society is excited to be hosting MDM 2026, granting UT undergraduates proximal access to the competition’s opportunities! Students are exposed to a full product development and pitching cycle, accompanied with professional, field-specific mentorship and feedback before a senior capstone design course. Adding to the 48-hour experience, a Networking Fair will connect students with the companies, startups, and graduate school programs that drive Texas’ health tech landscape.
We are asking you to donate to drive this competition's success on the Forty Acres!

Our Objectives
Since UT teams began competing at MDM, we have seen how this competition has grown both in reach and execution. Our goal is to continue growing MDM— supporting medical innovation and career preparation, strengthening connections with Texas’ innovation ecosystem, and coalescing diverse talent from across the nation. To reduce the cost barrier for attendees, we will direct donations towards:
- Providing 6 dietary restriction-friendly meals to participants, judges, mentors, and volunteers
- Hiring UTPD officers to be on-site during the event
- Hiring Texas Inventionworks staff to assist in 3D-printing teams' prototypes
- Reimbursing of a portion of participants’ attendance fees and/or travel costs
- Awarding cash prizes to the top five teams
- Gifting each participant an MDM T-shirt
Our Impact
MDM draws innovative minds from across the nation to our campus. Past teams have even obtained patents and launched startups based on their designs, proving the competition to be a catalyst for real-world impact. Whether students build upon their solutions or move on to new challenges after the competition, MDM provides a launch point for students exploring medical device development and translating those experiences into careers.
We sincerely appreciate all of our donors and supporters, thank you for helping us strengthen MDM 2026!
